Granger On The Bong

July 2nd, 2008

Some of Maui’s best shit, Granger Larson, will now be cruising with the Bong, as in Billabong. First order of business, the trials of the Billabong Pro at J Bay.  Be on the lookout for a video interview with Granger, …MORINformed and Kai Barger, soon  to hit  GrindTV.
Here’s the official press release:

Irvine, CA - July 2, 2008: - Top NSSA Champ Granger Larsen has joined Billabong’s surf team. One of the dynamic young competitors coming out of the USA, his first major assignment will be surfing in the Trials of the Billabong Pro at Jeffrey’s Bay shooting for a spot in the main event. He will also be preparing for the Junior World Championships next fall, hoping to win it (and short-circuit some of the long, hard grind on the WQS).”Billabong sees Granger as a future star and an ideal compliment to our current world class team,” says Enich Harris Marketing Director of Billabong USA. “For his age group he is at the top of his game.”

Those may be strong claims, but watching Granger surf in the NSSA Nationals at Trestles last week proved the point. Larsen won every heat he surfed in save one, taking the 2008 titles in both the Explorer Junior’s and Explorer Men’s categories and placing 2nd in the Open Men’s (where he lost his only heat in the final.)

Surfing since he was four, Granger already made a name for himself by winning a Junior Pro Championship by the time he was 15. Since winning the first competition he entered at 8 years old, Larsen has won the 2006 NSSA National Explorer Junior Championship as well as his current division titles.

“Coming straight out of the amateur ranks, I feel really lucky to get a spot on the Billabong team” says Granger. Plus, just being on a team with guys like Andy Irons, Taj Burrow, Joel Parkinson, Shane Dorian and Mark Occhilupo really makes me happy.”

A Honolua Bay regular, Granger lives with his family in Kapalua, Maui, where he just finished High School. Although he loves to surf at Trestles (his choice spot in California) and has taken a recent trip to the Mentawai’s, his favorite break is still the fabled Honolua Bay, right at the bottom of the hill from his home.

In addition to competing in select events on the ASP WQS Series around the world, Larsen will also be starring in Billabong’s next film feature “Loose” which will debut next spring. “His ability level matched with Billabong’s support system is a recipe for success,” says Enich Harris. “We see him with a, very bright future in competitive surfing.”

Julian Wilson Takes Nike 6.0 Pier Pressure And Gets …MORINterviewed

July 1st, 2008

Category: Julian Wilson, Nike 6.0 Pier Pressure

wilson-blog.jpg

In some pretty junky, blown-out surf at Huntington Pier super junior, Julian Wilson, who surfed a CT’ this year, took out the field. The Pier Pressure had some of the best Juniors out there, in part due to the NSSA Nationals that had wrapped up the day before, and everyone was still in town. Names like: Kai Barger, Andrew Doheny and Stuart Kennedy all surfed well and advanced through the contest.

Wilson was just on another level. On one particular crappy little wave he threw up an air reverse that he decided not to revert (which is way harder than just letting your fins spin you around), no check turns with this guy.

Well, as he was expected to, Wilson won, and as expected to, …MORINformed got the post-win interview. One topic that came up was the Adam Durrant situation. Apparently, someone has stolen Wilson’s identity on several internet surf sites: GrindTV, FuelTV, etc. This person has even gone to the extreme of photoshopping Wilson’s name off of ads and putting the name, Adam Durrant, in it’s place. Now, I had heard it was his manger that was doing it, and that it was some sort of weird Aussie joke or something.

Here’s the interview to straighten a few things out:

How’s it feel to win the Nike 6.0 Pier Pressure?

I hadn’t really gotten any results at Huntington before, so I’m stoked that I got a win. It’s not a very easy wave to surf a contest at, because it’s all over the place, and there’s no real defined peak. I was just catching a bunch of waves the whole contest, and that seemed to be how I was getting scores, so yeah I’m stoked!

Are you going stay here until US Open, or are you off to somewhere else?

Yeah, I’m hanging out there until the US Open, cruising.

Are you going to do some training on Southside?

Um, nah I don’t think so [laughs], I’ll probably go down and surf Lowers a bunch, or surf wherever is fun, but I don’t think I’ll be surfing out here much.

Did you know that there’s some guy, or somebody that um…

Adam Durrant?

Yeah, what’s that guy’s deal?

I have no idea, I don’t who that guy is. He’s just swooping on my profile.

He ’s real into impersonating you, he photoshops his name on all your ads, and some other weird crazy shit.

Yeah, that guy’s got nothing better to do with his time.

Chad [US Quiksilver team manger] told me it was your manager that was doing it.

No, no, no he was trying to get it off.

Yeah, well I don’t know what the deal is, but somebody’s real into it?

He must be a pretty bored human if he sits there on his computer and steals someone else’s identity.

Well anyway, do you have any trips coming up?

Straight after the US Open I go on a trip to the Mentawais, we’re going to be filming for a video called Eight Days Eight Slaves. It’s the same as the movie they made a few years ago called Seven Days Seven Slaves, with Taj Burrow, Jake Paterson, Ozzie Wright and all those guys. They’re going to do it again, but it’s going to be eight surfers, so it should be fun.
